The Oracle of Initiation and I shall be presenting at the 23rd annual Women of Wisdom Conference in Seattle this coming February, 2015. I was so excited to learn that Jean Shinoda Bolen, author of the brilliant Goddesses in Everywoman would be the keynote speaker on the same subject I had chosen for my presentation. She has just finished a new book on Artemis, and I am thrilled to see what her offerings are in February. While writing the text to accompany the Oracle deck four years ago the phrase “Artemis Return” flew into my psyche, and I knew that was what had happened during my seven-year vision quest creating the deck. We are in deeply transformative times, and one of the ways back to our instinctive knowing is through reclaiming the wild beauty within. Here is an excerpt from the Oracle book:
As I look back over the emergence of The Oracle of
Initiation deck, I realize I was in a process I now call my
Artemis Return. Artemis is the Greek goddess of the hunt,
the wild instinctive wisdom of the feminine within nature.
As one of the virgin goddesses, romantic attachments and men
do not define her; she is sovereign and self-defined. Her
untouched nature offers inspiration to young girls in embodying
their own authentic power.
As a protectress and servant to the wilds, Artemis is a
guardian of the untamed within all of us, the primal
aspects of our original essence. She is the mistress of the
animals, the base instinctive nature we all carry. She knows
the rhythms and ways of the forest, an apparition dashing
through the woods in her athletic white tunic with her
hunting dogs in pursuit. She claims her own purpose and
place, in community with the elemental spirits of the land.
She uses her bow and arrow to pierce to the heart of the
matter, harnessing the clarity of focused intent to remove
what no longer serves her. She hunts by moonlight, shrouded
and protected, silent and held, stalking the enchanting magic
within the darkness of the night.
The “return” refers to the astrological phenomenon called
our Saturn return. The planet Saturn travels in an almost
thirty-year cycle as it orbits around the sun. These cyclic
returns mark periods within a person’s life when major
thresholds of maturation are available. They occur between
the ages of 27–30, 58–60, and 86–88. Each of these times
are crossroads when a person may reevaluate how the
structures and priorities they have created are serving
them. These initiatory gateways test our character so we may
gain a clearer vision of where we have been and where we
want to go from here.
My husband Chris’s illness was diagnosed just after my first
Saturn return. After his death, I went on a seven-year vision
quest, reevaluating everything about my values, goals, and
perceptions. I was hunting for my true self within the shards
of my previous existence. Through my solo adventures,
passionate return to the earth, and creative renaissance,
my Artemis returned.
Below is the introduction to my workshop and then the descriptions of the three other events I shall be attending. Hope to see you there, and if you register for the conference before the beginning of December you can get a discount:
Artemis Return-Claim Your Wild Feminine Through Oracles with Mellissae Lucia
Monday, February 16th, 2015 9:00 am to Noon at North Seattle Community College, and the workshop is for women participants. Artemis is our primal feminine power yearning to be released. She is the greek goddess of the hunt and the wild places, sovereign in her earthen knowing. In this ritualistic workshop using The Oracle of Initiation divination deck, created by artist Mellissae Lucia during her own Artemis Return in the New Mexico desert, we will ceremonially meet our instinctive freedom through the deck’s fierce, compassionate wisdom. Exploring four of the archetypal elements of Artemis’ power, we will reach into our ancient cellular knowing to embody our own contemporary versions of Artemis’ wild beauty. www.OracleofInitiation.com
Jean Shinoda Bolen: Artemis the Indomitable Spirit in Every Woman
Friday, February 13th 7:00 – 10:00 pm The Indomitable Spirit in Everywoman~ Goddess, Archetype & Inner Child The story of Atalanta, under the protection of Artemis, the Goddess to the Hunt and Moon, and stories of real life women exemplify the untamed spirit in women. Women who have a sense of sisterhood with other women and relate to men as equals, focus on their own goals, have an innate sense of social justice, and find spirituality and solace in nature, will find that Artemis is a source of meaning, activism and a sustaining spirit of the sacred feminine. (men may attend this presentation).
Saturday, February 14th 9:00 am – 4:30 pm workshop Path with Soul, Path with Heart~ Trusting Your Inner Compass We have an innate sense that life is a soul journey with a purpose. To do what we came to do and be who we were meant to be is not so easy. Archetypal stories help support the soul choices and heart connections we make. Connecting with our inner compass, it may be what we know in our bones, which is soul knowledge that we decide to trust in the midst of a potentially terminal illness. Or we decide to follow heart-chakra information: what our heart knows is true for us. The most difficult experiences in life are opportunities to align soul and heart. Companions on the journey, and support from inner and invisible sources help us to stay on a path with heart. Jean Shinoda Bolen, M. D, is a psychiatrist, Jungian analyst and an internationally known author and speaker. Dr. Bolen is the author of thirteen books in over eighty translations: The Tao of Psychology, Goddesses in Everywoman, Gods in Everyman, Ring of Power, Crossing to Avalon, Close to the Bone, The Millionth Circle, Goddesses in Older Women, Crones Don’t Whine, Urgent Message from Mother, Like a Tree, and Artemis: The Indomitable Spirit in Everywoman.
Melissa Rosenberger: The Völvas of Seiðr Wyse-Women of Northern Europe
Sunday, February 15th 9:00 am to Noon. Völvas, a name meaning “staff-carriers”, were mystical and magical women who travelled through the Germanic and Norse regions of Europe providing oracular and healing services to communities via a practice called Seiðr (pronounced “sigh-the”). Participants in this workshop will learn about the history of the Völvas and Seiðr, both in its historical and present-day context. Then participants will have the opportunity to experience the modern practice of Seiðr at a Seiðr High Seat, where trained practitioners will sit in service to the community as Völvas, and participants can receive healing and oracular transmissions through this vital mystical template. Sunday February 15th 9am to Noon. North Seattle Community College
